A warm exterior can hide the icy soul within...
*Chills trotted in, meandering his way through the trees that marked the border of his land, and into the forrest the surrounded the Icefall. Wishing to impress his new mare Dante, he'd led her in the back way, so her first veiw of the Twilight Icefall would be from above, looking down upon the clearing and the frozen pool below. He stopped on the edge, looking down and the shimmering ice, then looked behind him, watching and waiting, and hoping she was not afraid of heights *

i walk this empty street on the boulevard of broken dreams
Dante followed Chill closely, and soon they came to a beautiful terrain, although it looked rather dangerous. That was a good thing, though, for Dante. It was what she was used to. She jogged through the snow, the zephyr whipping back her tresses. Hollows flare, intaking the crisp, cold air of her new home. She arched her serpentine and pawed at the loam, snorting out a puff of mist. Auds prick, and she saw a pile of hay laid out a little ways away. She quickly went towards it, sniffing it cautiously. But, as she had learned in her days as a rogue, food was scarce, so eat it while it's there. She turned back to Chill, and grinned through a mouthful of hay. "Your home- I mean, our home, is lovely." Hey, she was getting the hang of this.

*He grinned, and wandered up to the hay as well, also accustomed to accepting the gift of food without questioning where it came from. He didn't eat any of it though, not really hungry at the moment, and she obviously was. He nodded at her words, looking around hi, feeling very content and at ease in these lands...*
"I agree. I was born and raised here. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else..."
*He said simply, gazing at the frozen water. It was impossible to guess the thoughts running through the painted horses mind, but they seemed to put him at ease...*

tear myself open and sew myself shut
Dante eat a bit more, but she found the hay rather tasteless, and was soon full. Raising her crown, she tilted it to the side slightly, but she could not decipher what Chill was thinking. It was strange...reading other likes book had always come so easily to her, but it was as if Chill had a brick wall built up around him, stronger than any she'd ever known. Snorting softly, she didn't allow this to trouble her any further.
Auds prick, listening to his tones before releasing her own. But she wasen't looking at him anymore, instead her gaze fell on the frozen pond below. "I don't suppose you have any other doves...? It seems rather...deserted here." From the moment she'd entered the Province of Gideon, he was the only other equine she'd seen. Dante had always been surrounded by fellow equines, and now it was strange not to experience any competition for food or space. It was so care-free, she liked it. But how long would it last?

*He nodded, the same thought had bothered him for a while as well.*
"Strange isn't it? The Benefactors would not be too happy if they were to discover the Province so deserted. I suppose horses have been wandering back the barrier, and cannot get back in, or have been killed by the predators that are locked out, if they chose to so foolishly wander outside Gideon..."
*He shook his head sadly. He knew the humans who brought the food wouldn't be happy, for they never were when food was left in the Ameno Clearing for lack of horses to eat it. They tended to stick around longer, trying to figure out what was going on. Chill didn't like them, but he accepted they were there, and they were indeed the one's who brought the food, whereas most horses tended to accept that it was some other force that brough the food...Than again, those were the horses who would wander outside the Province's protective barriers and get locked out. Not all horses were as cunning as he was, Chill had learned that a long time ago. No matter, it just made it easier to decieve and manipulate them...*
"Not all the horses you will encounter here are the smartest. If the benefactors learn to the missing horses, they might start sending search crews into the wild to retrive some of those who have wandered out, if any survived... They tend to take great care in our survival, I've not yet learned why, but I intend to..."

there's nothing to live for
Dante flicked an aud, staying silent. She bobbed her crown. Dante knew hardly anything of humans and the Province, just that it was a sanctuary, and her only salvation. It provided her with what she needed, and what she couldn't get alone. She was grateful...but cautious, and untrusting as well, and confused. Why would the humans do this for them? It was topic for debate, but even still, they might not find the answer, since there was no communication between equines and humans. Dante nodded, letting her thoughts fade. "I too wish to know why." Came her vague reply.

*He nodded thoughfully, thinking back. He'd never seen a human, up close. Grim had claimed too once, on one of his midnight excursioned. He'd used it to torment the small colt, scaring him half to death... perhaps it was payback for that herd meeting when Chill's embrassed the young adult, and very self-concious colt, half to death. He still shuckled, remembering the mortified look on his brother's face. Perhaps Chill had deserved it, but over the years, he'd grown less frightened of the image of humans, and more fasinated by them. Looking around him, he tested the air. Frowing, he knew the storm was coming, turning, he faced the mare, very serious now. He didn't want to be caught out in the blizzard...*
"Perhaps, Dante, we should continue this conversation down below. Behind the waterfall is a hidden cave for just such an occasion. We won't have to worry about this storm down there. Please, follow me..."
*He said, finding the path down the snowy hill of trees slowly, so as not to slip. Winding in and out through the trees, he was soon at the base of the waterfall, and trotted up to the pool. Slowly, he placed a hoof onto the pool. Though he knew it was frozen solid, he always tested it first. Once, when he was younger, after a rare warm stell, the water below had thawed slightly. When a foolish colt had cantered across it, the ice had cracked, submerging the surprised colt in an instant, and killing him just as quickly. This was not the case today, for the ice did not even creak under Chill's weight...*
*Walking slowly over the frozen pond, her slipped behind the icefall, and into the cave he had visited every blizzard. He sniffed it cautiously, just making sure no intruders were here, then wandered farther in, to escape the wind, and turned behind him, waiting for Dante. When she arrived, his welcoming form spoke up through the darkness of the cave...*

wake me up inside
Dante herself had never encountered a human, only seen them from afar. She didn't fear them exactly...no, Dante feared nothing. But she was cautious of them, just the same, unsure of what they could do, of what was in their power. Dante was sensible in this way, but also rather foolish at times. She got carried away sometimes, and when she did, there was no reaching her.
Auds swivel about her crown, listening to the rise and fall of the roaring zephyr. Indeed, a blizzard was swiftly approaching, and it was best to find shelter before it actually hit. You never wanted to be caught in a blizzard, Dante had learned in her short time at the Province. The storms were bloody deadly. Her facade creased with worry as she gazed down at the gaping valley, before turning back to Chill, nodding her crown. Watching as he made his way down the icey path, she jogged to catch up to him, slowing to a careful walk, not wanting to slip on the it's snowy surface. She followed him closely, for he knew more of these lands than she, and so she didn't loose him in this great storm that was coming, and...also, it was nice to know someone was watching over her. Another thing to add to the list of things Dante would never admit.
Slowing yet still, Dante gazed up at the tall waterfall that loomed above her crown, then down to the frozen pool. She stared at it, as if willing it to crack, and thinking it should. As if reading her thoughts, Chill tested it, and Dante trusted his judgement. After all, his own life was at stake as well if his decision were to be wrong. However, as the huntress had gathered, Chill was no fool.
Making her way reclutantly over the solid pond, she followed her lord into the shadowed abyss of the cave. Dante could only just barely make out the white in Chill's patchwork canvas, and he probobly could on see her star, right on her forehead, if her forelock was not covering it. But, in a way, the cave was comforting. The howling sound of the zephyr was dulled, and his voice echoed against the cave walls, bouncing back to her auds a couple of times before fading away. And, she found as she reminded him, so did her's. "Humans, the Province, this whole thing. You probobly know more than me, care to tell me what you've found out?" She inquired, finding she rather enjoyed conversing with this intelligent charger.

*He heard the echo of her melodic voice as it bounced off the vaes walls, waiting untill it had finished to begin conversing again, so as not to confuse either of them. Ah yes, he remembered the topic now. A fasinating one he only wished he knew more of. smiling, he focused his attention to where he thought he saw her star, though he still could faintly make her out through the small ammount of sun still shining bleakly through the icefall, making it's last attempts to outpower the storm, for it knew soon the raging winds and snow would swallow it up, as well as any other horse caught out in it...*
"Yes, the humans. Well, not much to tell there, since no reliable source has laid eyes on once since, well, since our own ansestors were released out here in the Province, right after the eternal snow hit. You will find it surprising, Dante, how many have chosen to deny their exsistance at all, prefering to remain in blissful ignorance of the true identity of their benefactors. A pity really. If more took an interest, perhaps we could learn more... I've only noticed that when the horse population drops, they hang around here more, you can find their putrid scents everywhere. Other than than, I'm afraid I'm still in the dark about the whole situation..."
*He said with a chuckle, at the irony of this statement. grinning and looking about him, the cave brought so many memories flooding back. He quite enjoyed this mares company. Though a dark soul possesed the icy stallion, he did fit his mask well, and when he was not preoccupied with a goal or ambition of his, he ofted found himself truly enjoying others company...*
"Any other questions you have about the Province?"

i can't find myself
Dante glanced out of the cave, watching as the winds picked up, swirling outside of the cave. She was glad they weren't outside...she shivered. Auds prick, and she looked toward the white in the cave, which she knew to be Chill. She listened quietly, intrigued by the humans and their ways. Dante sighed, the sound barely audible. Labrums parted, and she prepared a response. "I see...yes, it really is idiotic how the others ignore what is truly there, what is going on this second." Dante shook her crown, tresses bouncing softly. They were so ignorant...so hopeless. It sickened her.
Looking back to Chill, she thought for a moment. "None, except...how long do you think this will last? This eternal cold?"

A warm exterior can hide the icy soul within...
*He frowned in deep thought at her question. When would this eternal cold end? Chill couldn't even guess. No horse he had ever spoken too had remembered the warmer times, nor had any of the horses they had spoken to in their youth. It had lasted for so long, could Chill honestly see an end to it his life time, or even ever? He didn't know. He didn't know what the residence of the Providence would do, if or when the cold broke. He didn't know if some of them could handle it. Such harsh conditions had made them stronger, yes, but a sudden return of the grass and flies that were but a myth in Chill's eyes, some thing could be a curse, even if they were blessings in fantasies...*
"Hoenstly, I haven't a clue. None I have spoken to remember themselves the times before the cold, nor do any of the horses they have spoken to throughout their lives. It seems we have become so used to the cold, I wonder what would become of us should the spring ever come."
*He shrugged, looking thoughtfully into the darkest depths of the cave for a while, before turning to look again at the faint shape that was Dante's form...*
"I don't know if I even want it. The cold does have it's uses. Though the weak die of starvation and cold, even the strongest could be cut down in their prime by disease. The virus cannot stand the cold..."

never say forever
Dante had forgotten the warmth of the sun, the glory of a bright day, she could only imagine them. Every day she grew more hopeful, imagining what it would be like when one day the sun broke through the thick layer of clouds, melting away the snow. It would be like a re-awakening...if it even happened. Which she strongly doubted. Barrel heaved as sigh as she listned to Chill, finding that he agreed. She bobbed her crown, labrums parting once the echos stopped. "Yes, it would be a time for rejoice if that spring ever came. But I wonder what the others, the ones living in denial, would think. Would they shun it just as they had the humans? Or would they welcome it? It's hard to know what's going on in their minds." She was mostly thinking out loud, with her crown c.ocked quiziclly and her depths slightly glazed over. "But I don't think it shall ever come." She added, mostly to herself, and mostly to not let her hopes get too high.
"I suppose it is good to have the weak weeded out." Dante said thoughtfully, looking out beyond the cave.

*He listened quietly to her thoughts, wondering what indeed those in denial would do. Probably assume it was a gift from nature, just as the food was in their minds. Chill supposed it was a happy, even if it was ignorant, exsistance. Not worrying about the humans must be nice. Not that he'd seen one, or had any proof of ill wish to the horses, it was just a nagging suspicion. Why would they care for the equines so, unless they wanted something in return? It was a dangerous and disturbing thought to Chill, one he choose not to share.*
"Yes, I believe it is. How else would we have surived the Ice Age so long, if not for the weak passing on, while the strong bred to each other, giving rise to stronger foals who would be more used to and more reisitant to the cold. If life continues in this way, perhaps someday, the ansestors of the strong and proud of the Province of Gideon will live to see the snow melted into a glorious spring..."

[center]never was and never will be
Dante nodded throughtfully, auds pricking. "Yes, some years from now." She blushed slightly when he mentioned the strong breeding. She hadn't meant to, nor did she know why, she just did. Slightly embarassed, she looked away, gazing beyond the entrance to the cave again. She noticed the winds weren't howling quite so fiercly, and the blizzard was dying down. Thankful for something to break the silence, Dante turned back to what she could see of Chill. "The storm's blown over, I think it's safe to go out."

*In the darkness, he could not see her embarrasment, but the tone of voice, the shifting, the changing subject. Chill wondered silently what he'd said to embaras her, but didn't think too much of it. After all, mares tended to be a bit touchy and emotional at times. No need to provoke it...*
*Wandering up the the cave's opening, he stuck his head out and peeked beyond the ice. Smiling, he looked back into the cave and nodded.*
"Indeed it has. What a relief..."
*He said, and stepped out into the fresh power to gaze upon his lands, burried even deeper in the Eternal Snow. Smiling, the thought did not trouble him in the least. He was happy and comfortable with the snow and cold, and he could die happy if the cold should never break into spring...*
